Why VANS are the ideal everyday shoes
Loved for their minimalist versatility and rebellious attitude, Vans is one of the biggest brands in the world and one of the most recognized shoes out there. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and Vans have been copied constantly, but never beaten on comfort, durability and style. Since their origins in the 1960s, the design has remained relatively unchanged, proving their timelessness and iconic status within skate communities and beyond. So whether you’re a new buyer or own 5 pairs or more, here’s a buyer’s guide with everything you need to know about Vans styles, fits and history.
When was Vans founded?
Vans was founded in 1966 by brothers Paul and Jim Van Doren in Anaheim, California. Originally called The Van Doren Rubber Company, the original Authentic shoes were the first of the Vans styles, made that same year, and have remained virtually unchanged ever since. The name was soon shortened to the much catchier 'Vans'. Then skaters fell in love with the shoes because of their grippy soles and durability. By the mid-1970s, Vans shoes had become a must-have in the Californian skate community.
By the end of the 1970s, Vans had released their Authentic, Old Skool, slip-on and Sk8-Hi styles, complete with the signature 'jazz stripe'.
How are Vans made?
All Vans styles are made in a 5-step production process that starts with the sole. Between 70 and 85 million pairs of Vans are made every year, in a process that has been refined and perfected since the 1960s.
Vans are made with a vulcanized rubber sole. This means that the sole is essentially baked once to cure the rubber and press it into the signature waffle pattern, and then again after production. The second bake happens when the complete shoe is steamed after assembly; this keeps the sole durable but also makes it flexible and easy to break in.
The rest of the shoe is cut with Vans’ signature stitching and details, finished with the rubber logo on the heel.

Are Vans styles unisex?
Yes, Vans styles are all unisex, so everyone can wear whatever they like. For the core styles, all sizes are unisex, but some styles, such as the platform soles, may specify a gender, because the size may run smaller or not come in certain sizes. But if the shoe fits, wear it!
How do Vans fit?
Unlike many other brands, Vans fit true to size, which means that whatever size you wear in other shoes is probably the size you’ll wear in Vans; easy!
For the best idea of your size, measure your feet by standing on a piece of paper with your heels against a wall and marking the tip of your toes. Measure this length by hand for a clear answer on what size you are. Of course, you can also stop by a Burned store for personalized advice.
What is the difference between regular and Comfycush Vans?
Comfycush Vans look exactly the same, but it’s what’s inside that counts. Comfycush Vans have an extra cushioning layer made of a special kind of foam that is soft enough to cushion, yet durable enough for skating or long days on your feet. Comfycush Vans have twice as much cushioning, making them the perfect option if you’re looking for ultimate comfort on long days.

Are Vans sustainable?
As a brand, Vans strives to make its materials and processes as sustainable as possible, which is a major focus across the entire fashion industry. As part of its Green Sole initiative, Vans sources the cotton for its canvas shoes in line with the Better Cotton Initiative, which works to reduce the environmental impact of cotton production and to improve the lives of farmers and workers. They have been working with the initiative since 2014 and have set themselves the goal of using only 100% sustainable cotton by 2025.
How do you clean Vans?
Because Vans are made of canvas, they are easy to clean, but you want to avoid unnecessary washing to keep the color vibrant. Instead, just try freshening them up by cleaning the soles.
How do you clean the white sole?
Put some tape over the canvas to protect the color, then use some rubbing alcohol or bleach to wash the white soles thoroughly; any stains or dirt will come off quickly. When you’re happy with the result, wipe them down with some water to make sure no bleach is left behind.
For a quick wash:
mix a mild detergent with warm water. Use a soft brush, wet the bristles and gently brush over the canvas, focusing on the marked areas. Rinse the whole shoe with warm water. Stuff the shoe with paper and let it dry for a day.
For a thorough clean:
Vans can be machine washed, but make sure you put them in a pillowcase or laundry bag for protection, and always let them air dry.
To deal with water marks:
If you’ve been caught in the rain or your white Vans look a bit stained, here’s a great little cleaning technique. Soak toilet paper in warm water and wrap your shoes in it, as if you’re doing papier-mâché. Cover the shoe in several layers and let them dry for a day. Once they’re dry, unwrap all the paper and your shoes will look as good as new.
