Buying an outdoor basketball? See here which one is most suitable for you!

You've decided to buy an outdoor basketball , but with all the options out there, you still don't know which ball is best for you. The experts at Burned Sports have listed the differences between outdoor basketballs .

What size basketball do I need?

First you want to know which size basketball is right for you. In competition 5x5 basketball there are 3 official sizes of basketballs . The information below is based on the NBB guidelines (Dutch Basketball Association). In competition 3x3 this is 1 size.
    • The  Size 5 basketball is for children, and mainly for girls up to 14 years old and boys up to 12 years old.
    • The size 6 basketball is for girls from 14 years and boys from 12 years. This is the largest size in women's basketball, so the women seniors also play with size 6.
    • The size 7 basketball is the most common basketball in the league and the NBA. This format is used by all men from 15 years old.
    • In the 3x3 basketball competition there is 1 official basketball size. That is size 6 (weight 7) for everyone. Where in the 5x5 competition the ball size depends on age & gender

On our website you can set a filter, so you can set it to your desired size and you will see all the balls that fall within this category.

What different types of surfaces are there?

There are many different surfaces you can play basketball on. This is also the reason why there are so many different basketballs.

For example, outside around the corner you often have a field made of asphalt or tiles. If you often play on such a field, we recommend that you buy a rubber ball. These wear out the least quickly, but the disadvantage is that they have little grip. If you want a ball with more grip, take a look at an in/outdoor ball . These have more grip and do not wear out very quickly. Note that they wear out faster than rubber balls.

What you see more and more often outside is a Flex Court. A Flex Court is a special type of tiles that you place on top of asphalt. These tiles are provided with a shock-absorbing layer and self-draining structure. It is a less rough surface than asphalt itself, so your ball will also be damaged less quickly. An indoor/outdoor ball is perfect for this. These balls have an excellent grip and are very wear-resistant. Despite the fact that these fields are less hard, this is not yet the ideal field for a real leather indoor ball.

In professional basketball, a hardwood court, usually oak, is often used. The balls hardly wear out on this court, so you can safely opt for an indoor ball. These have the best grip, but if you play with them outside, they will wear out quickly. This is not the case on a hardwood court, and you can play basketball for a long time. In addition, in the Netherlands you have a court made of marmoleum indoors. This is an elastic and very durable surface. The same applies here as with a hardwood court. You can safely use a good indoor ball for this.

    What about the price-quality ratio?

Our outdoor balls do not differ all that much in price. The cheapest balls are made of 100% rubber, which is very wear-resistant, making it a good outdoor ball. However, they do have much less grip. The more expensive balls are made of composite leather, which is a mix of different materials. The nice thing about this material is that it feels like real leather, but it is not, so it wears out much less quickly than asphalt. These balls also have more grip, which is why they are slightly more expensive than rubber balls. The price of these balls also depends on the quality of the composite leather.

What are the main differences between rubber and composite leather balls?

The rubber balls are made to play on hard surfaces. Rubber is a very strong material, so it does not wear out quickly when you play on the square, on the street or on the basketball courts outside. The disadvantage of rubber is that it has little grip, so it is more difficult to control the ball. Composite leather is a mix of different materials. This ensures that the ball feels like real leather and therefore also has better grip. The disadvantage is that it wears out a little faster than a rubber ball, but less quickly than a real leather ball. Rubber balls also do not have an inner bladder and composite leather balls do. This means that these balls keep their round shape longer than rubber balls. As a result, they bounce less high than a rubber ball, whether you prefer that is personal taste.

    What are 3x3 basketballs?

The 3x3 basketball is the size of a size 6 ball, but weighs as much as a size 7 ball. That is true for children, women and men. This ball is used for 3x3 basketball and the go-to basketball on all playgrounds.

What are the biggest differences in brands?

We have outdoor balls from Wilson , Spalding, Molten and Burned . On a large scale, the brands do not differ much from each other. It is often the small things that one does differently than the other. For example, Wilson invented the Extended Range Tech that ensures that the weight of the ball is redistributed from the inside, so that you can shoot even better from greater distances. Furthermore, most Wilson balls have a Micro-Touch Cover, which is an extra microscopic layer of texture on the cover to create a double-layer grip . What Wilson also often sees is that the entire ball is provided with a pebble structure, even the logos and the channels. You only see that with the other brands in a small number of models. The balls from Spalding are extra soft and have a good grip due to a Microfiber technology. Spalding has a patent on this Microfiber tech, so you will only find it at Spalding. These balls are often game ready, straight out of the box. The balls from Burned are made of durable composite leather that is also wear-resistant. While most Wilson and Spalding balls are brown, Burned balls come in a variety of colors. Nike also differentiates itself by adding unique colors to their design. Nike balls are made with a combination of different materials, such as rubber, nylon, and synthetic leather. They also have wide grooves for extra control.

Of course you want to be able to play basketball for as long as possible. We at Burned Sports understand that and have listed a number of tips that you can do to maintain your ball. So that you can play with your favorite indoor, outdoor or in/outdoor Basketball for a long time.

tip 1. If you want the ball to keep its grip longer, don't leave it outside in the rain and snow. Put it inside, because the ball wears out faster due to a lot of temperature changes. It can also deform and discolour.

tip 2. Pump up the ball well. If you pump up the ball well, it will bounce better and keep its shape nicely. If you keep it soft for too long, it can deform and dribbling will also become more difficult. So buy a good pump, such as the Burned Dual Action Pump .

tip 3. If you have played in the rain or you have cleaned the ball, dry the ball with a towel. So don't let it dry outside or in the sun. If you do that there is a chance that the leather will crack.

Hopefully we have been able to help you choose the perfect basketball. On our website we have written a clear description for each ball, so that you know exactly what you are buying. If you are not 100% sure, you can always come to our store to test, feel and view the balls.
