Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers is an American baseball club from Los Angeles, California. The club plays in the Western Division of the National League in Major League Baseball. The club was founded in Brooklyn (New York) and was known as the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1958 the club moved to Los Angeles.
Jackie Robinson
the first African-American baseball player in Major League Baseball. Jackie Robinson is the runaway winner for the number 1 spot. That is undeniably true. On the field, however, he built a stellar 10-year career that was narrowly eclipsed by a Hall of Fame pitcher. Robinson won the Rookie of the Year honors in 1947, claimed the MVP in 1949 and made six consecutive All-Star teams from 1949 to 1954. His .342 batting average set the pace for the National League during his MVP season. He also led the majors in on-base percentage (.440) in 1952 and topped the NL steals chart twice (1947, 1949). In 1962, the legend who broke the Major League Baseball color barrier was given a deserved spot in the Hall of Fame.
History of the Los Angeles Dodgers
Founded in 1883, the Dodgers were originally based in Brooklyn, New York, and were known as the Atlantics. The team joined the American Association in 1884 and won the league pennant in 1889. Brooklyn was one of four American Association teams to join the NL the following year, and they won their first NL pennant in their first season in the league. Brooklyn developed a natural rivalry with Manhattan's New York Giants after their move to the NL, which became one of the game's most famous and enduring feuds, even after each team's move to California in 1958. In 1913, the team moved to Ebbets Field, an intimate stadium that was home to the Dodgers until 1957. The team was known as the Grays, the Bridegrooms, the Superbas and the Robins before settling on the Dodgers name in 1932.
