Basketball is one of the most widely played sports in the world. This sport is played by children and older people alike. Professional or amateur, you obviously can’t play basketball without a ball!
How do you choose the right basketball?
First of all, it is important to know which size you need. Basketballs come in many different sizes and types. Each age group needs a different ball size. We sell balls in sizes 5 to 7.
Size 5 is a standard youth ball for children (9-11 years)
Size 6 is a standard women’s ball, boys (12-14 years)
Size 7 is a standard ball for men and boys (15 years or older)
For indoor or outdoor use?
Next, it is important to know on which surface you want to use your ball. Basketballs can be made of leather, synthetic leather, rubber and plastic. Each material is suited to a different surface.
Indoor basketball
What makes a basketball suitable for indoor use? The most important factor is the material the outer layer is made of. An indoor ball is made of leather or a certain synthetic leather, such as polyurethane or PVC. These materials are ideal for use on wood and synthetic floors and therefore suitable for indoor use. If you play regularly and only indoors, we recommend going for a genuine leather ball.
Outdoor basketball
An outdoor basketball is made of rubber instead. This material provides durability and control over the ball. As the name suggests, an outdoor ball is only suitable for use outside.
Indoor/outdoor basketball
This type of basketball is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. So you can use this ball in the gym or when you are shooting hoops outside with your friends. An indoor/outdoor basketball is often made of rubber or synthetic leather.
How firm should the ball be?
A basketball that bounces all over the place, or a ball that is too soft? That is obviously not ideal. To test whether your basketball is still firm enough, you can drop it on the floor from shoulder height. Does the ball bounce back above your hips? Then your ball is still firm enough!
