Wilson Evolution Indoor Basketball Size 6 & 7
Ask an American high school player about their game ball and the answer is the Wilson Evolution — for years the most-played indoor basketball in the country. Not because it’s the most expensive, but because it feels good right away: soft, grippy and broken in from the start.
On top of that, Wilson is the official ball supplier of the NBA. The Evolution is the model that brings you that same line without the price tag of an official game ball.
Soft catch, full grip
The core is Wilson’s Cushion Core: a combination of light foam and butyl rubber. That way the ball cushions the catch — your fingers feel the difference during a long practice. The outside is microfiber composite leather with a fine grain that gives grip without a break-in period.
Channels where your fingers find their place
The channels are inlaid composite, not stamped. Your fingers find them without looking, and on a shot that gives you the same release every time. It’s one of the reasons shooters value this ball so highly.
Why this ball stays indoors
Composite leather is made for a varnished gym floor. On asphalt or concrete, the cover wears smooth within a few games, and then you lose exactly the grip you bought it for. If you play on the local court, choose a rubber outdoor ball.
What size basketball do you need?
If you play recreationally, this is the rule of thumb:
- Size 7 — men and boys from around fifteen
- Size 6 — all women and girls, and boys from about twelve to fifteen
- Size 5 — kids up to about twelve
Torn between sizes for a growing player? Go smaller. With a basketball that's too heavy, a kid learns to shoot from the shoulder instead of the wrist, and that technique is hard to unlearn.
We carry the Evolution in sizes 6 and 7.
The official NBB size chart
If you play in a league, it's not your age that counts but your category — and sometimes your level too. This is the table from the Handboek Competities of the Dutch Basketball Federation, season 2025-2026. Your age on 1 January determines which category you fall into.
| League play | Ball size | Hoop height |
|---|---|---|
| U8 regional | Size 4 | 2.60 m |
| U10 regional | Size 5 | 2.60 m |
| U12 regional | Size 5 | 2.60 m |
| U12 national | Size 6 | 2.60 m |
| U14 regional and national | Size 6 | 3.05 m |
| Men's U16 regional and national | Size 7 | 3.05 m |
| Women's U16 regional and national | Size 6 | 3.05 m |
Three things stand out. U12 depends on the level, not on age: regionally you play with a size 5, nationally with a size 6. U16 splits by gender — men move up to size 7, women stay at size 6. And from U18, the regular size simply applies: 7 for men, 6 for women.

Pressure check
The right pressure is 0.5 to 0.6 bar (7 to 9 PSI). At the right pressure, every ball bounces the same, and that does more for your training than any drill.
No pressure gauge? Use the bounce test: hold the ball straight out beside you at shoulder height and drop it. If it bounces back to about your hip, the pressure is right. If it comes up higher, let out some air; if it stays lower, pump in a little more.
Want to hold it first? In our store in Den Bosch, the Evolution sits next to the Evo NXT and our own Burned line, so you can feel the difference before you choose.
This is the ball we recommend to teams that want to stay one step below the Evo NXT: the same serious game, at a much friendlier price. In the store you’re welcome to hold it next to the Evo NXT — you’ll feel the difference right away.
You play in a league or train seriously in the gym.
You want a ball that feels good right away, without breaking it in.
You catch a lot of balls and don’t want hard hits on your fingers.
You’re looking for the best-known indoor ball in its price range.
Do you play on the street, on asphalt or concrete? Composite leather wears smooth quickly there; choose a rubber outdoor ball like the Wilson NBA Authentic Outdoor.
Looking for the ball of official FIBA tournaments? That’s the Evo NXT.
Choose size 6 if you play in the women’s league or in most youth categories.
Size 7 is the men’s size from U16.
If you don’t know which size your team plays, check with your club.
Microfiber composite leather
Check the air pressure before you play; a ball that’s too soft bounces lower and takes more effort.
Keep it indoors and don’t store it in a hot car or a damp bag.
