Intro
An internship is often a required part of your studies. Anyone in vocational education or at a university of applied sciences comes across it. During this period you put the theory you have learned into practice. This is my experience as an intern at Burned Sports.
Who am I?
My name is Mees Janssen, I am 21 years old and I study Crossmedia Design at Sint Lucas in Eindhoven. This is a 4-year program and I am currently in year 3. My hobbies include basketball, drawing and going to festivals. Crossmedia Design is a broad, interdisciplinary program where developments in digital media and communication come together. Crossmedia Design connects you with all forms of image making; photography, illustration, film and animation.
Looking for an internship
When I was looking for a host company, Burned Sports appealed to me right away. Burned is one of the few stores in the Netherlands that sell basketball clothing and exclusive basketball shoes. Burned stands out by offering collections you don’t see everywhere, with brands such as: Jordan, Arkk, Vans, Nike, Puma, and New Balance. Burned completed the picture by selling indoor sportswear and lifestyle products such as Only & Sons.
The Intake
During the intake I sat down with the head of Burned, Floris de Jongh. An enthusiastic and pleasant person who was keen to have me on the team as a designer. Floris was a young man with a big dream who played a year of high school basketball in the USA for the Zalma Bulldogs and was then determined to start his own business with basketball shoes, which back then were not available anywhere. This grew into Burned Basketball and eventually Burned Sports. After my motivation and our conversation, we decided to work together.
Tasks
One of my tasks at Burned is working with sneakers and photographing products for social media and the website. There is definitely the freedom and room to come up with fun ideas. Writing blogs and product descriptions are also regular tasks of mine. You also get the opportunity to really dig into that. In the area of design, we make banners for the website, branding and corporate identities for the companies we work with, and stickers for the store. You even get time to print clothing for customers.
Work atmosphere
Here at work, understanding for one another is key. We always start with a daily kickoff and end with a daily wrap-up to see how everyone is doing. If you’re having a bit of an off day, your feelings are taken into account. Tasks are varied regularly so you are not doing the same things all the time, and the motivation to work hard stays. Upstairs at Burned there is a workspace where you can sit with your laptop and work in peace. The atmosphere in the store is nice, the music here is varied and never feels monotonous.
Conclusion
Burned Sports is a top internship that only exceeded my expectations. It is a company where I learned a lot and was also given a lot of freedom to achieve my learning goals. The great thing about this company is that you automatically learn a lot about marketing and consultancy. My grade for this internship is a solid 9/10. Are you in a creative program and do you love streetwear and basketball? Then I recommend you grab your chance at this great host company right away.
