Basketball movies you have to see
It’s December again, the month of dark and cold days. The time when there’s really nothing you’d rather do than watch a movie on the couch in your loungewear with a mug of hot chocolate. For a true basketball lover, it’s of course fun to watch a basketball-themed movie then. We’ve put together a list of basketball movies for you that you definitely have to see!
Like Mike
If you like feel-good comedy movies, this movie is perfect for you. The movie is about an orphan named Calvin. He and his friends Reg and Murph are huge basketball fans. At a Los Angeles Knights game, they have to sell chocolate. That’s when Calvin finds magical shoes that give him the powers of a star player. He is offered a contract with the Knights and gains more respect in the basketball world. Jealousy grows and an old acquaintance tries to take Calvin’s luck away. Real NBA players appear in this movie, such as Allen Iverson, Steve Nash, Jason Kidd & Vince Carter.

Amateur
One of America’s greatest talents, Terron Forte ( Michael Rainey Jr. ), is picked up by an NCAA prep team. He finds out that playing at a high level isn’t that easy and he doesn’t feel at ease. The practices are tough and he also notices that things aren’t always fair.

Coach Carter
Coach Ken Carter ( Samuel L. Jackson ) does something remarkable. He suspends his undefeated team because their grades are poor. He is a coach who demands discipline and respect. He does everything he can to keep everyone in line. Many basketball players are familiar with the term “suicide,” but Coach Carter is a master of this sprint drill. For every minute someone is late, the whole team has to line up on the baseline. Many people disagree with the coach’s methods, but gradually the players begin to see that they really do serve a purpose.

White men can’t jump
Neither Wesley Snipes nor Woody Harrelson is even 1.82 meters tall, but their confidence and talent for trash talk make up for it. Even though they don’t immediately look like good basketball players, they definitely have talent and come up with a plan to make money. They go around all the basketball courts to challenge people to a game of basketball.

Blue Chips
The successes of Pete Bell, the acclaimed coach of America’s All-Star basketball team, seem to be coming to an end. He is faced with a very bad season and needs new players. Convinced that he can win, he brings in those new players, who can take him back to the top. He comes face to face with the darker side of top-level sports.

Finding Forrester
Jamal grows up alone in the Bronx after his father’s death. In this largely Black neighborhood, he makes contact with white writer William Forrester. William takes an interest in Jamal’s writing and becomes his mentor. He increasingly takes on the role of a father. Jamal is invited by a school to take classes there. Thanks in part to his intellectual but also athletic skills, it is a success. Because besides being very smart, Jamal also has a talent for basketball. Just when everything seems to be going well, a teacher suspects Jamal of plagiarism in his writing. Let’s hope it all works out.

The last dance
You really have to see this documentary series about NBA legend Michael Jordan. Even if you’re not a basketball fan, I would definitely recommend it. You see how Jordan grows into a basketball star, with the help of other top players and top coaches. All the successes and all the setbacks in his career.

I think you’ll get through the winter just fine, there are plenty of movies to watch. So grab your sweatpants, hoodie and warm socks from the closet and get comfortable.
