Puma Suede Classic Purple
Few sneakers have a story this concrete. The Suede came out in 1968, and that same year it stood on the podium in Mexico City.
1968: why this shoe is part of history
In 1968, PUMA released a warm-up shoe under the name Crack. Suede was chosen because it is easy to dye in all kinds of colors. At the Games in Mexico, PUMA athletes were given the model to wear off the track; most in blue and white, Tommie Smith in black and white. His protest on the podium turned that shoe into an image you still come across today.
From the podium to the street
In the seventies and eighties, the Suede became the shoe of the b-boys in New York. Breakdancers wore it with fat laces, because the flat suede and the wide sole did exactly what they needed on cardboard. That is why this model has been in production for almost sixty years: it was reinvented twice by the people who wore it.
Full suede in lilac
The upper is all suede, in a soft lilac purple. On top of that sits the Formstrip in white, with the gold PUMA lettering next to it. The sole is off-white instead of bright white, which makes the shoe look less clinical. The laces are kept in the same purple shade.
What you notice about a flat sole
Under the shoe is a flat rubber sole with a fine tread. You stand low on it and you feel the ground well. There is little cushioning, so for long days on your feet this is not the most comfortable pair. The rest of the time, that low stance is exactly what gives the shoe its line.
Caring for suede
The suede is what makes this shoe beautiful, and it is also the part that needs care. Brush it dry with a suede brush, spray it with a protector beforehand and keep it out of the rain.
We always mention that suede needs care: get a brush and a spray with it, and this shoe will last for years. If you want to wear it every day in all weather, a leather model is the smarter choice.
For anyone who wants a sneaker with history and knows the story
A good fit if you’re looking for a color you don’t see on every rack
For fans of suede and of hip-hop history
Handy if you want a low shoe that disappears under your pants
If you’re on your feet all day, this flat sole has little cushioning.
Suede and rain don’t mix; for wet days, a leather shoe is the better choice.
If you’re looking for an athletic shoe to train in, this model lacks the support for that.
